Steps to becoming a foster parent
To ensure we match the right children with the right families, there are some important steps to becoming a foster parent.
Attend an informational meeting
Submit a pre-service application
Attend an initial interview
Complete pre-service training
Participate in a home study
Requirements to become a foster parent
To become certified as a therapeutic foster parent, you must meet state licensing requirements. These include:
Applicants must be at least 21 years old and a Maryland resident
Applicants can be single or married
Applicants must have a car
Applicants must be financially stable
Applicants must have a landline telephone
Applicants must have adequate space for the foster child without disrupting the family’s usual sleeping and living arrangements. A child may share a room with another child of similar age and gender
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED
Applicants and all adults residing in the home 18 years or older must have fingerprints for a criminal background check
Applicants and all household members must have an initial medical exam including TB clearance
Day care and/or home care cannot be provided in the applicant’s home
Applicants are not allowed to smoke in the home
They must also sign agreements regarding the use of firearms, child abuse and neglect, discipline, and the provision of respite and/or care.
